294 staff and retirees honored with Service Awards

5 p.m., May 14, 2004--The University of Delaware recognized some 294 faculty and staff members at a service awards dinner Thursday, May 13, at Clayton Hall.

The group included 223 UD employees with 5,820 years of service and 71 retirees with a combined total of 1,717 years of service. During a reception in the lobby of Clayton Hall before dinner, a slide show of many of the honorees in their work locations was shown.

“All told, we’re here to recognize 294 people for a combined 7,537 years of service,” President David P. Roselle said. “You don’t have to be a mathematician to recognize that these numbers are impressive.”

Roselle joined several UD administrators, including Maxine Colm, vice president for administration, David Hollowell, executive vice president and University treasurer, and Provost Dan Rich in recognizing faculty and staff members for service ranging from 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years. In addition, special recognition was given to retirees.

“These terms of service are really quite extraordinary when you consider the highly mobile and quickly changing society in which we live,” Roselle said. “Working at the same place for an extended period of time is no longer commonplace.”

Besides noting that one of five American workers changes jobs each year, Roselle said that studies have shown that people make such changes despite pay and benefits as competitive as those offered at UD.

“While attractive financial packages often lead workers to accept offers of employment, studies show that those workers do not remain at an organization unless they believe they are making a contribution,” Roselle said. “As evidenced by your committed service, you do feel that way, and we are truly appreciative of your commitment to the UD family.”

Roselle also thanked the 71 retirees for their contributions during their many years of service.

Such contributions by service award recipients and retirees, Roselle said, have caused UD to be recognized for several notable accomplishments, including:

  • A stellar report from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education re-accreditation review panel;
  • Technological innovations and major new campus construction and enhancements to the physical plant;
  • National recognition of achievements by students and faculty, including a national football championship; and
  • Unprecedented success in UD’s capital campaign fund-raising effort, the Campaign for Delaware.

“Never underestimate your role in the achievements we have made,” Roselle said. “I do not. Because of the work our honorees have done, the University has gained great respect and recognition, taking its place among the premier institutions of higher education in the United States.”

Earlier in the evening, retirees could have a formal portrait taken of themselves as a memento of the event. They also received certificates of appreciation and a certificate suggesting tongue-in-cheek ways to use their official UD chairs, such as "Resting on your laurels," "Reading UD's Messenger," "Getting your voice back after a Blue Hen championship" and "Surfing UDaily for all the latest news."
