Biotechnology seminar, networking event set April 1

12:07 p.m., March 19, 2004--Information technology and life science experts will host a biotechnology seminar, tour and networking event at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 1, at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute (DBI) at the University of Delaware, 15 Innovation Way, in Newark.

The three-hour event will be hosted by Digital Delaware, a networking group for the technology business community in Delaware, Sun Microsystems, DBI, Delaware Technology Park, the Delaware Economic Development Office and the Delaware Chamber of Commerce.

“The state of Delaware is building a statewide life sciences initiative, and to assure success, it is important to connect the dots,” J. Michael Bowman, president of the Delaware Technology Park and chairperson of Digital Delaware, said of the event. “There is a huge opportunity and a critical need for the IT community to not only learn about but to actively contribute to the worldwide biotechnology revolution.”

“The convergence of information technology and biotechnology is required to facilitate bioinformatics research in data mining, modeling and visualization by using supercomputers and is a component to give the state an competitive edge in the growing biotechnology industry,” Karl V. Steiner, associate director of DBI and professor of electrical and computer engineering at UD, said.

The event will include a tour of DBI that will highlight ongoing research and development activities, particularly three-dimensional visualization tools created by merging information technology with biotechnology.

“This event is only a small part of a larger effort, but it is all part of the larger plan to create and foster a life sciences network across the state,” Steiner said.

Companies and individuals can register for the event at the Digital Delaware website at [www.digidelaware.com].
