Blue Hen softball team to open in Pirate Classic

1:14 p.m., Feb. 11, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team will open the 2004 season by competing in tournaments in North Carolina and Virginia.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will participate in the Pirate Classic tournament at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., from Friday, Feb. 20, through Sunday, Feb. 22.

UD will take on host East Carolina, George Mason, Towson and Fairfield.

The following weekend, Feb. 27-29, the Hens will participate in a tournament at Virginia Beach. They will take on Radford, Norfolk State, Liberty and George Mason.

UD had an overall record of 20-21-7 in 2003 and finished third in the Colonial Athletic Association with a record of 8-7. As a result of the strong conference showing, UD Head Coach B.J. Ferguson was recognized as CAA Coach of the Year.

The Hens reached the CAA postseason tournament, where they were eliminated 1-0 by Towson.

The Hens return senior Laura Streets, who was named to the CAA All-Tournament team, and second team All-CAA selections Jenn Joseph, Laurie Erickson and Melissa Basilio.

Streets hit .342 with eight home runs and 28 runs batted in. Erickson hit .296 and Basilio .258.

Joseph hit .261 and, as a pitcher, went 12-9 with a 1.65 earned run average.

In addition, sophomore pitcher Lindsay Jones returns to the mound. Jones had a fine freshman season, going 8-6 with a 1.98 earned run average.
