Delaware softball team signs two recruits

10:47 a.m., Jan. 14, 2004--Two softball players from Virginia and Maryland have signed NCAA national letters of intent to attend the University of Delaware, it was announced Tuesday by Head Coach B.J. Ferguson.

Kathleen Lee, a third baseman and outfielder from Manassas, Va., and Allison Borchers, a middle infielder and outfielder from Fallston, Md., will enroll at UD this fall.

Lee is a standout at Osbourn High School and in 2003 led the team to a third-place finish at the Virginia state tournament. She earned first team All-District and All-Region honors, was a second team All-Metro pick and was named to the state championship All-Tournament team.

Lee served as team captain as a junior in 2003 and was named her school's Best All-Around Female Athlete last spring. She also plays with the Manassas Blaze club team.

"Kathleen looks to excel at the collegiate level," Ferguson, who is in her 24th season at the helm of the Fightin’ Blue Hens, said. "Her work ethic will certainly enhance her athletic ability to reach her goals. She will add depth to our defense with her versatility and quickness. Her ability to read the defense, along with her speed, will add another dimension to our offense. She has been extremely successful through her aggressive play, taking advantage of the slightest defensive mistakes."

Borchers, who plays with the Harford Cyclones Club team, is a third-year standout at Fallston High School. She was named team Most Valuable Player as a sophomore and has served as team co-captain the last two seasons.

"Allison is a multitalented athlete who has excelled in softball, soccer and basketball in high school," Ferguson said. "She is a disciplined athlete who will continue to challenge her teammates to reach beyond their goals. We look forward to working with Allison as she has the ability to contribute to our program on both sides of the plate."

UD returns 12 letter winners from the 2003 team that went 20-21-1 and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association tournament for the second straight season.

The Hens will open the 2004 season Feb. 20-22 at the East Carolina Tournament in Greenville, N.C.
