UD ranks sixth in the nation among providers of short-term programs abroad

2:15 p.m., Sept. 5, 2003 --Q: I really want my student to study abroad or to participate in an off-campus domestic program sponsored by UD. Can you tell me what opportunities and courses are offered and what geographical areas are available? Is it necessary to speak a foreign language to travel to non-English-speaking countries?

A: The University of Delaware is a great choice for students who want to study abroad. UD consistently ranks among the top 20 research institutions in the country in the percentage of students we send abroad, and in 2002 we were ranked sixth in the nation among providers of short-term programs abroad. We offer more than 65 programs in more than 25 countries annually, and our programs are open to students in all majors.

Some programs have course prerequisites (such as having attained a certain level of foreign language fluency), but many have no prerequisites at all. Another nice feature of our programs is that the courses students take abroad are UD courses, so there are no problems with transfer credit or determining whether courses will fulfill graduation requirements.

We also offer thousands of dollars in need- and merit-based scholarships in order to enable as many students as possible to participate.

The deadlines for our winter and spring programs are coming up fast; interest meetings will be held early in fall semester so students can inform themselves about our wide array of programs. To find out more please visit our extensive website at [www.udel.edu/studyabroad].

Also, Freshman Family Weekend visitors can visit the Center for International Studies information table during the "Lunch and Learn" program from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, on The Green and/or attend the "Study Abroad Programs" information sessions at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. in Gore Hall that afternoon.

If you still have questions, please e-mail the Center for International Studies at [studyabroad@udel.edu], or call us at (302) 831-2852. Thank you for helping to add an international dimension to your student's education!
