UD’s club Roller Hockey teams off to fast start

3:40 p.m., Nov. 24, 2003--UD’s club Roller Hockey teams have begun what looks to be another successful season, hoping to qualify again for the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association tournament, which they have done every year since the team was founded in 1998.

The 22-member club is divided into two teams, Blue and Gold, which play in Division I and B Division, respectively. Both the Blue team (3-3-1) and Gold team (6-1-0) compete in the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (ECRHA), which includes club teams from Maine to Virginia. No university currently recognizes roller hockey as a varsity sport.

The season runs from October through the national tournament in April. On weekends, UD’s teams travel to neutral rinks to play three or four other teams. The next event is scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 21 in Rahway, N.J.

At the end of the regular season, UD participates in the ECRHA’s regional tournament. The top five teams from the ECRHA tournament get a bid to the national tournament, where they compete against 27 other teams from across the country. This year’s national tournament is being held in Anaheim, Calif. Although UD has never failed to make the national roller hockey tournament, the Blue Hens have yet to make it out of the second round of nationals.
