UD Relay For Life seeks to raise $100,000
During the Relay For Life, participants walk around the track in the field house to signify the ongoing fight against cancer. Participants form teams of eight to 15 individuals before the event and raise funds through sponsorship and other activities. All the money raised goes to the American Cancer Society for education, advocacy, research and service. Many people have been affected by cancer in one way or another, and this is a way to give back and to feel like you are doing something, Heather Barber, BE 05, co-chair for Relay For Life 2004, said. It honors those lost to cancer and those who have successfully fought the battle. Last year, the UD Relay For Life raised almost $75,000, ranking second among college Relay For Life events in the Mid-Atlantic Division. This years goal is $100,000, and 1,000-1,200 participants, including students, faculty and community members, are expected. Participants in this years Relay For Life also are able to raise funds online for the first time. Each team and individual members are assigned a web page where they can receive donations online and track their individual and team progress. Its a very simple process, and its also quite convenient, Barber said. Relay For Life, which was started nationally in 1985, came to UD in 2002 through a group of students led by senior Shaun Gines, BE 04. The event has grown substantially since the first Relay For Life. Students have been very eager to participate in Relay For Life 2004. Weve grown tremendously in the past two years, and I only expect the numbers to continue growing, Barber said.
