Nominations sought for Redding Award recognizing campus diversity efforts

4:48 p.m., Feb. 18, 2004--The Redding award recognizes the promotion, enhancement and implementation of diversity by UD individuals, units, departments or organizations resulting in a significant change in the campus climate and/or composition within the University community.

Formerly known as the President’s Diversity Award, it was renamed to honor and remember the late outstanding civil rights attorney Louis L. Redding, a graduate of Howard High School in Wilmington, Brown University and Harvard Law School.

In 1929, Mr. Redding was the first African American to be admitted to the Delaware bar.

During his long career, he toiled tirelessly for civil rights and justice. He was instrumental in cases that led to desegregation of the University and of the state of Delaware’s public schools.

The award recognizes his contribution to racial and cultural diversity at UD and the fact that the University’s social and academic life is enriched by the contribution and full participation of persons from many different backgrounds.

Previous recipients include the Ronald E. McNair Achievement Program, the University Gallery, the Office of Residence Life, the College of Engineering’s RISE (Resources to Insure Successful Engineers) Program, the UD Library and the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy.

The award consists of a plaque and a $1,000 gift to the Morris Library in the recipient’s honor. The recipient may help select educational materials for the library in conjunction with library staff members.

For nomination forms and information, contact the Office of Affirmative Action and Multicultural Programs at 831-8735. Deadline for nominations is Monday, March 1, and forms, with no more than two pages of documentation, should be sent to Gloria Davis, 124 Hullihen Hall.

Current members of the Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity and employees of the Office of Affirmative Action and Multicultural Programs may not be considered for the award.
