RAD classes offered for spring semester 1:57 p.m., Feb. 4, 2004--To increase campus safety, Public Safety is offering Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) classes for the spring semester. Each 15-hour course, which is offered in a series of five three-hour classes, teaches women how to combat sexual assaults and rapes through awareness and hands-on self-defense training. The program is offered from 6-9 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and is free to all female students, faculty and staff at UD. The classes, which include realistic simulation scenarios, are taught by certified instructors. Classes also teach participants how to improve home and personal security, how to avoid date rape and how to abide by laws when carrying Mace or other weapons. All self-defense tactics are designed to be used in a variety of confrontational situations, and class participants are encouraged to practice their techniques on officers dressed in padded equipment. The first five-week course in basic RAD training begins Monday, Feb. 16, in 002 McKinly Lab and continues through Monday, March 15. The second course begins Thursday, Feb. 19, in 002 McKinly Lab and continues through Thursday, March 18. Advanced RAD training is offered in a five-week course on Wednesdays, from March 31-April 28, in 014 Mitchell Hall. This class refines skills learned in basic RAD training and requires successful completion of the basic RAD course. The final RAD course offered for the spring semester is a one-evening, four-hour workshop called Keychain Defense. This program, which requires participants to have successfully completed basic RAD training, will be offered from 5-9 p.m., on both Monday, May 3, and Thursday, May 6, in 014 Mitchell Hall.
