Blue Hens still No. 2 in national football polls

3:40 p.m., Nov. 3, 2003--The University of Delaware football team has retained its No. 2 ranking in both national NCAA Division I-AA polls released Monday afternoon.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, who are 9-0 after a narrow 24-21 overtime victory over the University of Maine on Saturday, trail top-ranked McNeese State University in both the Sports Network/CSTV poll and the USA Today/ESPN poll.

In the Sports Network/CSTV poll, UD trails McNeese by 2,431 points to 2,351. McNeese received 74 first-place votes to 15 for UD.

In the USA Today/ESPN poll, UD trails McNeese by 1,052 points to 1,016. McNeese received 31 first-place votes to six for UD.

Rounding out the top 10 in the Sports Network/CSTV poll are Southern Illinois, Massachusetts, Wofford, Northern Iowa, Villanova, Montana, Pennsylvania and Colgate.

Rounding out the top 10 in the USA Today/ESPN poll are Southern Illinois, Massachusetts, Wofford, Northern Iowa, Villanova, Montana, Western Kentucky and Western Illinois.

Both Massachusetts and Villanova are, like Delaware, members of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference.

In the next three weeks, UD must play Atlantic 10 games at Northeastern, which received votes but did not make the top 25, at home against Massachusetts and at Villanova.
