Paul Jones honored with historical photograph

4:45 p.m., Oct. 15, 2003--Margaret Andersen, professor of sociology, and her husband, Richard Rosenfeld, presented UD benefactor Paul Jones with a framed photograph from the Rosenfeld Collection in a small ceremony Oct. 3 in Elliott Hall.

Margaret Andersen, UD professor of sociology, and her husband, Richard Rosenfeld, present UD benefactor Paul Jones with a framed photograph from the Rosenfeld Collection.

The photograph, which depicts an African-American sailor splicing a line from a cargo net, was taken by Rosenfeld’s father, Stanley Rosenfeld.

Stanley Rosenfeld, who grew up in the Bronx in the early 1900s, entered the family photographic business at the age of 13 and later acquired fame for his work depicting the shipping industry in the 20th century. Together with the photographs taken by his father, Morris Rosenfeld, Stanley Rosenfeld’s work forms the body of the internationally recognized Rosenfeld Collection, one of the largest archives of maritime photographs in the United States.

Andersen and Rosenfeld presented Jones with the photograph to honor their long friendship and to continue the legacy left by Rosenfeld’s father.

For more information about the Rosenfeld family and the Rosenfeld Collection, visit the Mystic Seaport Museum web site at: [www.mysticseaport.org/research/ro-rosenfeld.htm].
