Russell Peterson lectures May 11 on reshaping democracy

3:42 p.m., May 6, 2004--Russell Peterson, former governor of Delaware, will discuss his newest book and talk about reshaping democracy in the United States in a lecture set for 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 11, in the Trabant University Center Theatre.

Titled “Taking Back Democracy in America,” the lecture will focus on ways to counteract corporate greed and political dishonesty and will offer potential strategies for reclaiming the pioneering spirit of democracy.

Peterson, who is widely recognized as an international environmental leader, is a former DuPont scientist and Delaware governor. He was instrumental in protecting Delaware’s coast from refineries, petrochemical facilities and deep sea ports and worked with scientists Carl Sagan and Paul Ehrlich to increase awareness about the threat of “nuclear winter.”

Peterson also served on the national commission to investigate the 1979 nuclear accident at Three Mile Island and has published more than 450 articles. His newest book, “Patriots Stand Up!: This Land is Our Land; Fight to Take it Back,” challenges everyone to use democracy to confront militarism and to halt the plundering of the environment. He has received 14 honorary degrees and currently serves as distinguished policy fellow in the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy.

The free public lecture is cosponsored by the College Democrats, Students for the Environment, UD Greens, the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy and the University of Delaware.
