Delaware’s Peffer named top swimmer in CAA

Sarah Peffer was named the CAA championship meet’s outstanding swimmer.
3:28 p.m., Feb. 23, 2004--The University of Delaware’s Sarah Peffer won five titles and was named the outstanding swimmer at the Colonial Athletics Association swimming and diving championships that concluded Saturday night at the George Mason University Fitness and Aquatic Center in Fairfax, Va.

In the championship meet, the UD women’s team finished fifth and the men’s team finished 10th. George Mason won the women’s title, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington won the men’s title.

Peffer, a senior, capped an outstanding meet by winning the 1,650-yard freestyle in a meet and school record time of 16:45.07.

With that time, Peffer became a provisional qualifier for the NCAA championships to be held March 18-20 at Texas A&M University. Should Peffer be selected to compete, she would become the first swimmer in UD history to qualify for the NCAA championships. UD diver Julie Van Deusen participated in the 2002 NCAA championships.

Peffer won three events in last year’s CAA championship meet and won five titles this year, setting four school records and two meet records in the process.

In addition to the 1,650, she won the 400 individual medley and the 500 freestyle and was a member of the 400 medley relay team and the 800 freestyle relay team.

Peffer won the 400 individual medley in a school record 4:25:81 and the 500 freestyle in a school record 4:54.90. She joined Kristen Avioli, Sara Stephens and Jill Fitzgerald on the winning 400 medley relay team and Meredith Law, Sara Reed and Fitzgerald on the winning 800 freestyle relay team, which also set a school record.

Also setting a school record during the final day of the conference meet on Saturday was Fitzgerald, who placed second in the 100 freestyle in a UD record time of 52.24. She bettered the former mark of 52.78 set by Nancy Davis in 1997.

Also on Saturday, Stephens finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:06.00) and Meredith Law finished fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (17:35.36). On Friday, Stephens had finished second in the 100 butterfly in a school record 56.06.

For the UD men, freshman Steve Henn was ninth in the three-meter diving event with a score of 336.10 points. Earlier, he had finished sixth in the one-meter dive, the top individual showing for the men’s team.

The top relay finish for the men’s team was in the 200 freestyle event, in which Alex Skacel, David Hardy, Colin Gibson and Brendan Spencer finished eighth.
