Registrations due Sept. 3 for fall professional development workshops

11:50 p.m., Aug. 28, 2003--UD’s Office of Human Resources offers two series of career development workshops for professional staff members during the fall semester. Registration deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 3, and space for the courses is limited.

Career development for new professionals

One series is designed to provide new professionals—UD employees with five or fewer years of experience—with a broad base of knowledge concerning career development tools, budget issues, campus technology and human resource issues.

The fall semester “Career Development Program for New Professionals” will be presented from noon–2 p.m. on the following Fridays: Sept. 5 and 19, Oct. 3 and 24, and Nov. 14. The sessions will be held in Room 261 at 413 Academy St.

Comments from past participants

“Great speakers who share their own secrets of success and describe pitfalls so you don’t have to experience them to learn. This seminar series gives you strategies to get the job you want—little theory, but loads of real-life techniques that work.”
Sandi Dean
Coordinator
Office of the Vice Provost for Research

“I thought the workshops were filled with a tremendous amount of information. The speakers and presentations offered great advice, and I’d recommend them to any staff member.”
Bob DiIorio
Video Producer
University Media Services

“The detailed information we received in each session and the opportunity to ask pointed questions was invaluable to me as a new employee. I thought it was time well-spent.”
Sandy Hargrove
Program Coordinator
Academic Services Center

Scheduled sessions include:

  • Session I, “Organization of the University and Understanding the Culture of the University,” presented by Nancy Wallace, director, human resources; and Executive Vice President and University Treasurer David Hollowell;
  • Session II, “Classification Program and Career Ladders,” presented by Chris Ulrich, manager, human resources;
  • Session III, “UD Budget Process and Information Technologies at UD,” presented by Janet DeVry, manager, IT-User Services; Peggy Bottorff, assistant provost, provost’s office; and Carol Rylee, director, budget office;
  • Session IV, “Developing Tools for Career Growth,” presented by Marianne Green, assistant director, MBNA Career Services Center; and
  • Session V, “Networking at the University and Identifying/Developing a Relationship with a Mentor,” presented by Richie Holland, manager, human resources.

Career development for veteran professionals

The second series is designed for veteran professionals, those with six or more years of professional experience at UD. This series will devote more attention to issues related to long-term career goals and career enhancement initiatives.

These sessions will examine more personal stories of University staff who have moved into different positions within the campus organizational structure. Presenters will discuss how they changed their employment situation by taking advantage of a wide range of opportunities that UD has to offer.

The “Career Development Program for Veteran Professionals” will be presented from noon–2 p.m. on the following Fridays: Sept. 12 and 26, Oct. 17 and 31, and Nov. 21. The sessions will be held in Room 261 at 413 Academy St.

Scheduled sessions include:

  • Session I, “Organization of the University and Understanding the Culture of the University,” presented by Wallace and Hollowell;
  • Session II, “Career Case Studies: How Did I Get Here from There?” presented by a panel of academic and administrative professionals;
  • Session III, “Career and Academic Enrichment Opportunities,” presented by a panel of academic and administrative professionals;
  • Session IV, “Networking at the University and Identifying and Developing a Relationship with a Mentor,” presented by Holland; and
  • Session V, “Developing Leadership Competencies,” presented by Myrna Bair, Institute for Public Administration.

“We are pleased to offer two comprehensive series that address the career interests of the recently hired professional, as well as those of our more seasoned staff,” Maxine Colm, vice president for administration, said.

Registration

Professional staff interested in joining one of the series must send an e-mail to Holland at [RichieH@udel.edu], by Wednesday, Sept. 3. Applicants must include their names, departments and phone numbers.

Participants must be available for all sessions and will be selected based on availability for the entire series and group composition. The program instructors want to ensure that there is a balanced mix of participants representing both academic and administrative offices.

For more information, call Holland at 831-2059.
