Classifieds scam alert 3:55 p.m., Feb. 23, 2004--There have been a couple of scams on campus involving the Universitys online classified ads and bogus checks within the past week, according to Jim Flatley, assistant director of Public Safety. Users should be aware of possible scams and be cautious about transactions where the check is larger than the asking price, and a refund is requested, he said. In two instances, sellers listed vehicles for sale and they were contacted and advised that the buyer was acting on behalf of a third party at an overseas location. The buyer said the seller would send a check for a large amount that had been received as a tax refund, inheritance or settlement. The buyer then instructs the seller to send the difference between the amount of the check and the purchase price via Western Union to yet another person in New York, who will pick up the vehicle and arrange for shipment. A similar type of scam involving forged cashiers checks victimized several persons in the region in September. Authorities advise waiting at least four weeks to be sure a cashiers check clears before completing such transactions. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
