Special Olympics events set June 9-12 9:03 a.m., June 1, 2004--A 10-mile bike loop, a 160-mile relay run across Delaware and the arrival of the torch at Delaware Stadium are the events set to open the summer 2004 Special Olympics Delaware gamesan annual competition that will feature more than 1,000 Special Olympics athletes from across the state. Schedule of kick-off events Wednesday, June 9At 6 p.m., a 10-mile bike loop from Delaware Seashore State Park to the inlet and back will launch the opening ceremonies. The loop will conclude with an additional two-mile ride to the head of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk for the 7:45 p.m. send-off of the 18th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run. This fund-raising event costs $25 to enter and is free to spectators. Thursday, June 10At 1:40 p.m., the torch run commences from Legislative Hall in Dover. Friday, June 11At 1:20 p.m., the torch run picks up from the Wilmington Police Department in Wilmington. At 4:15 p.m., the run will continue from the Newark Police Department in Newark. At 5:15 p.m., the torch arrives at Olympic Village in Delaware Stadium on the University of Delaware campus. At 7:30 p.m., opening ceremonies for the games begins, sponsored by DuPont. Saturday, June 12The games begin on the University campus, with more than 1,000 Delaware Special Olympics athletes competing in aquatics, bocce ball, tennis, powerlifting, softball and general athletics activities. Special Olympics Delaware provides a year-round program of quality sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 4,000 volunteers make this program possible for the 2,200 local athletes who compete in Special Olympics Delaware events.
