New Student Convocation to open 2003-04 academic year Sept. 2 University President David P. Roselle will welcome the class; Rosie K. Mauk, director of AmeriCorps will deliver the keynote address; and Howard E. Cosgrove, chairperson of UDs Board of Trustees, will present the Universitys Medal of Distinction to the Rev. Michael Szupper, founder of the St. Thomas More Oratory as the campus center for Catholic ministry. New Student Convocation is a required event for all new students. Faculty, staff and other members of the University community are encouraged to attend. Faculty and staff do not need to wear academic regalia and should sit with the students from their departments. Bus transportation to the Bob Carpenter Center will be provided from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. from pick-up locations at the Smith Hall overpass (northbound and southbound), Alfred Lerner Hall, the Perkins Student Center, the Trabant University Center (garage driveway) and Townsend Hall (front). New students and faculty have been assigned pick-up locations based on the locations of the departmental academic orientation meetings held just before convocation. These assignments were e-mailed to departments. For a complete, updated list, click here. Mauk, who will deliver the Convocation address, is a longtime champion of volunteer services at the state and national levels, and she was appointed director of AmeriCorps in 2001. The national service program engages 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet pressing community needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security and assorted human needs. The Medal of Distinction is presented to individuals of the state and region who have made humanitarian, cultural, intellectual or scientific contributions to society, have achieved noteworthy success in their professions or have given significant service to the University, the state and the region. Also scheduled to participate in convocation are Elizabeth D. Xenelis, an incoming freshman who will sing the national anthem and alma mater; Natalie A. Ross, a UD senior who will deliver a student welcome; Trudy E. Gilgenast, a member of the Class of 1953, who will present the 2007 class flag to Dusti J. Vanderwende and Javier E. Velasquez, members of the new class. After the ceremony, lunch will be served on the Bob Carpenter Center Concourse for all guests. Lunch for new students will not be available in the dining halls that day, so lunch on the concourse is their only option. From the conclusion of the ceremony and continuing until 2 p.m., bus transportation will be provided back to central campus, with the Smith Hall overpass (northbound) and Alfred Lerner Hall as the drop-off points.
