Error appears in newspaper article

3:42 p.m., June 19, 2004--There is an error in an article published in the June 19, 2004, edition of The News Journal on the University of Delaware’s decision to pay out $1.1 million from the state in bonuses to its employees, in keeping with the spirit of legislation recommended by Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and passed by the Delaware General Assembly.

The article states that “University of Delaware employees did get raises in 2004, although they had not received them in the previous two years.” In fact, UD did give raises to employees in the years mentioned, and UD has not missed an annual salary increase for all employees at least back into the 1980s, Maxine R. Colm, vice president for administration, said.

A correction of the error has been requested of The News Journal, and Colm sent a letter to the editor clarifying the facts.

On June 17, Gov. Minner and certain legislators said that the salary money that had been allocated to the University was to be used as bonuses for UD employees, even though those employees already had received raises and had done so annually in previous years as well, when state employees had not.

Colm announced Friday, June 18, that the University would treat the state’s salary appropriation as an addition to UD’s salary increases already in place, rather than apply the appropriation to the University’s general fund.

The amount to be paid and the method of payment will be determined in the days ahead, she said.

Colm also sent an e-mail message June 18 to all University employees to clarify the state bonus plan.
