NFHCA Academic Squad includes eight UD players 10:24 a.m., March 4, 2004--Eight members of the University of Delaware field hockey team have been named to the 2003 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Academic Squad, which was announced Wednesday. UD scholar-athletes honored were seniors Megan Henry and Jillian Stevens, junior Leah Geib and freshmen Kaili Kao, Lindsey Piester, Danielle Stevens, Stephanie Swain and Dusti Vanderwerde. Scholar-athletes selected to the NFHCA National Academic Squad achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 through the fall semester. Henry started all 21 games in the backfield for the Fightin Blue Hens in 2003, and Stevens saw action in seven games. She registered an assist against Wake Forest University in 2002. Geib scored two goals and had six assists this past season while playing both in the midfield and on defense. She was named to the STX NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team. Swain started all 21 games as a freshman, scoring two goals and one assist. Kao played in 18 games and started the last 16 and Piester played in four games. Both Danielle Stevens, the younger sister of Jillian, and Vanderwerde sat out the season as redshirts. UD finished the 2003 season with a record of 14-7 overall and 6-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Hens were ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division I in the final NFHCA poll.
