UD men’s basketball signs guard Andrew Washington 10:25 a.m., June 29, 2004--Andrew Washington, a 6-foot, 3-inch guard from Allen County (Kansas) Community College, has signed a scholarship offer and will compete for the University of Delaware men’s basketball team this fall, Head Coach David Henderson announced Monday. Washington played high school basketball at Friendly High School in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area before enrolling at Allen County Community College, where he was named Jayhawk Community College Conference Co-Most Valuable Player after the 2003-04 season. He earned All-Conference honors both years and was named second team All-Region this season. In 2003-04, Washington averaged 19.6 points per game and had 15 games of 20 or more points. He averaged 6.4 rebounds per game and had 47 steals. At Friendly High, Washington was a three-year starter and as a senior was named honorable mention All-Metro by the Washington Post. "With the graduation of Mike Ames and the injury to David Lunn, we needed to fill a spot in the backcourt," Henderson said. "Andrew has a knack for getting to the foul line, witnessed by his 240 free throw attempts last season. He can knock down the three-pointer if you don't respect him and he can drive to the basket and use his 40-inch vertical leap if you overplay him. He is a good fit for our program, and the University of Delaware is a good fit for Andrew." Washington, who joins freshman guard Sam McMahon in the incoming class, is expected to enroll in classes this summer and will have two years of athletic eligibility remaining.
