Newark Community Day set Sept. 14

Editor's note: Rain date is Sunday, Dept. 21. In case of inclement weather, call 366-7147 for cancellation informatiion.

10:42 a.m., Sept. 12, 2003--For more than three decades, the city of Newark has celebrated its persona with Newark Community day, a fall festival that starts, this year, at 10 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 14, and extends from The Green and down Main Street to the Newark Shopping Center and Market East Plaza. This year’s event has even more to offer since it coincides with Freshman Family Weekend on the campus.

Newark’s businesses, government, civic associations, nonprofit organizations, ethnic groups, artisans, politicians and flea marketers will be offering a chance to get to know them better and have a blast.

On The Green, there will be activities for the kids, like scarecrow making and face painting; a fine art and homemade craft competition and sale; two stages for bands and demonstrations; information about local issues, businesses, services, parks and recreation; a bazaar and flea market filled with attic treasures and surprises; and a food court with an ethnic flavor.

Main Street businesses will be open and offering dining and retail specials. On the Academy Building lawn, there will be an exhibit of art cars, live entertainment, a sidewalk chalk festival and more activities.

This year, the Newark Shopping Center will host mini motos and entertainment, and the Market East Plaza will offer its weekly farmers’ market with fresh fruits and vegetables. Newark Community Day is coordinated by the city of Newark’s Parks and Recreation Department in cooperation with UD, Christina School District, Downtown Newark Partnership and the Newark Arts Alliance. Sponsors include the DaimlerChrysler Newark Assembly Plant, Rodel and Fleet Credit Card Services.

For more information, call the Newark Parks and Recreation Department at 366-7060. For cancellation information, please call 366-7147.
