UD figure skaters contend for national titles

6:49 p.m., Jan. 8, 2004--Senior figure skaters who train at the University of Delaware are in medal contention at the 2004 State Farm national championships now being held at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

In addition, novice ladies skater Christine Zukowski has won gold. It was Zukowski's second national championship, having also won the 2001 juvenile girls title.

As a champion, she will participate in Sunday's Chevy Skating Spectacular.

Defending national champions Tiffany Scott and Philip Dulebohn are in first place in the senior pair competition following the short program held Wednesday. Jennifer Don and Jonathon Hunt are in fourth place, and Laura Handy and Jeremy Allen are in fifth place.

In senior dance, Kendra Goodwin and Brent Bommentre are in fourth place, Christie Moxley and Aleksandre Kirsanov are in fifth place and Julia Rey and Philipp Rey are in eighth place following the original dance segment of the championship.

The pair and dance competition free skate events will be held beginning at 4:50 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9.

In junior pair competition, Andrea Varraux and David Pelletier finished in third place. Kelly Settelen and Andrew Goldman finished sixth in their first nationals appearance in novice pairs.

UD's Kimmie Meissner is in second after the short program in the junior ladies division.

The national championships are being broadcast by ABC Sports.
