Nanjing University Traditional Instruments Orchestra in concert Oct. 1

2:30 p.m., Sept. 30, 2003--The Nanjing University Traditional Instruments Orchestra will appear in concert at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. Founded in 1996, the Nanjing orchestra plays national music on Chinese traditional instruments, including the bowed and plucked string, wind and percussion instruments.

Nanjing University is situated in south of the Yangtze River, a picturesque part of the country, and the orchestra is particularly good at presenting the music of this area, which is characterized by its gracefulness. With members from all over the country, the orchestra is also skilled at performing the “sweet” tunes of Guangdong and the “grand” music from North China.

Guided by the precept of "promoting the national culture, popularizing the classic arts, developing the quality-oriented education and displaying the brilliance of the students," the orchestra has won many awards and toured widely. The ensemble also has recorded a compact disc, titled "Melodies on Campus—Album of Nanjing University Traditional Instruments Orchestra.”

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and $3 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the Trabant University Center or Bob Carpenter box offices on the campus.

The concert is cosponsored by the Department of Music, the Center for International Studies, the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Science and the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic and International Programs.
