Musical Art of Love featured at Dec. 7 concert 4:01 p.m., Dec. 5, 2003--UDs Department of Music presents a free concert by Collegium Musicum, directed by Russell Murray, at 8 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7, in Bayard Sharp Hall. The theme of program, The Musical Art of Love, is the French chanson, a style of love song that began with the troubadours and trouvères of medieval France. These songs were central to Western music and poetry from the 13th century well into Renaissance, and along the way influenced vocal forms throughout Europe and formed the basis for different kinds of instrumental pieces. A highlight of the concert will be variations on one of the most popular chansons of the 16th century, Pierre Sandrins Doulce memoire. Collegium Musicum, part of UDs early music program, gives instrumentalists and vocalists the opportunity to study and perform music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque on period instruments.
