Delaware men’s soccer falls to William & Mary, ODU

Hayes Glanden
8:45 a.m., Oct. 28, 2003--The University of Delaware men’s soccer lost two Colonial Athletic Association games this weekend, both against nationally ranked opponents.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens fell 4-1 at the College of William & Mary on Friday and 3-1 at Old Dominion University, the No. 2 team in the nation, on Saturday.

UD will return home for a pair of CAA games at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. The Hens will take on Hofstra University at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31, and Drexel University at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2.

UD is 3-9-5 overall and 0-5-2 in conference.

Against Old Dominion, the Monarchs took a quick lead as Michael Goncalves found the net within the first two minutes.

UD then surprised Old Dominion, answering less than eight minutes later when freshmen defender Hayes Glanden scored his first career goal.

The tie was short lived, however, as Old Dominion’s Attila Vendegh scored twice in a three-minute span to secure the victory.

UD junior goalkeeper Kyle Haynes had six saves.

In Friday’s game, William & Mary scored four second half goals in the 4-1 victory.

After a scoreless first half, William & Mary got on the board early in the second half when Clayton Voss found the back of the net at 67:25.

UD’s Adam Flanigan then scored for the Hens off an assist from sophomore Justin Arpan at 72:15.

The game remained tied at 1-1 for just over 45 seconds before William & Mary fired a three-goal salvo to put the game away. Patrick Scherder notched a goal at 72:47 and Jarrett Thomas notched two goals within three minutes of each.

Haynes had five saves in the loss.
