UD men’s lacrosse team to face Villanova May 5

Matt Alrich scored five goals in the victory over Denver.
10:59 a.m., May 3, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team defeated nationally ranked Denver 15-9 on Saturday night at Rullo Stadium and carries a two-game winning streak into the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament.

The CAA tournament will begin Wednesday, May 5, with the Fightin’ Blue Hens traveling to Villanova University for a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Hofstra will play at the top seed, Towson University, that same night.

UD fell to Villanova 12-4 earlier this season, which led to a three-game losing streak. The Hens have won their last two games, defeating Sacred Heart and Denver, which entered the game ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division I.

In the victory over Denver, UD improved to 10-5 as attack Matt Alrich celebrated Senior Night with five goals and an assist.

The contest was also the Milt Roberts Game, an annual event that honors the former UD men’s lacrosse head coach who served 1950-57, and Alrich was named the Milt Roberts Most Valuable Player for his efforts.

Also against Denver, UD’s Joe Trentzsch scored a season-high three goals, Jordan Hall had two goals and an assist, Cam Howard had a goal and two assists and Ryan Metzbower had a goal and an assist.

Freshman Alex Smith also scored a goal and won 20 of his 27 face-offs.

Denver jumped out to a 2-0 lead as the Pioneers held UD scoreless in the first quarter. Trentzsch got the Hens on the board just 44 seconds into the second quarter to begin a five-goal run that put UD up 5-2. The Hens went into halftime leading 6-4.

Denver cut the lead to 7-5 early in the third quarter but Smith started a three-goal run by the Hens that extended the lead to 10-5.

UD put the game away in the fourth quarter as Trentzsch and Andy Hipple scored goals within the first two and one-half minutes.
