UD men’s lacrosse team defeats Mount St. Mary’s

Dave Powers scored two goals in the victory over Mount St. Mary’s.
9:08 a.m., March 11, 2004--With 11 different players scoring goals, the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team defeated Mount St. Mary’s College 14-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 4-1 on the season and now prepare to host the University of Albany in a game at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 13. The Great Danes are 1-1 with a victory over Manhattan and a loss to top-ranked Johns Hopkins.

In Wednesday’s victory, UD players Dave Powers, a junior midfielder, Cam Howard, a freshman attackman, and Ryan Overs, a senior midfielder, scored two goals apiece.

Also scoring for the Hens were Ryan Metzbower, Joe Trentzsch, Jordan Hall, Matt Alrich, Alex Smith, Andy Hipple, Andrew Benazzi and Greg Grevey.

Alrich, who increased his team-leading goal total to 11 for the season, scored in his 20th straight game.

In addition to scoring a goal, Smith, a freshman, won 16 of his 21 faceoffs.

UD outshot the Mountaineers 46-31 and held a 38-23 edge in groundballs and 16-5 edge in faceoffs.

In goal for the Hens, Chris Collins had 12 saves and Tommy Scherr had three.

Matt Warner, Billy Jautze and Jason Werner scored for Mount St. Mary’s.

UD jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one quarter and held a commanding 10-1 edge at the half.

Alrich and Howard scored 33 seconds apart early in the game for a 2-0 lead before Mount St. Mary’s got on the board with a man-up goal by Werner.

It was all Hens after that as UD reeled off four straight goals, including two by Overs, to take a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. The Hens scored four unanswered goals in the second quarter to build a 10-1 halftime lead.

UD extended the lead to 12-1 on goals by Hall and Metzbower early in the second half.
