Delaware men’s lacrosse team downs Lehigh 5-3

Matt Alrich scored two second half goals to lift UD past Lehigh.
3:22 p.m., Feb. 23, 2004--University of Delaware senior attackman Matt Alrich scored two second half goals, both on assists by freshman Cam Howard, as the Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated host Lehigh University 5-3 on Saturday.

With the victory, UD improved to 2-0 and is off to its best start since the 1999 squad opened 8-0 on the way to an NCAA quarterfinal playoff appearance.

Alrich, who also had assists on two first half goals, broke a 3-3 tie when he scored just two minutes into the second half. He added the final goal just four minutes into the fourth quarter.

UD peppered Lehigh goalkeeper Tom Ellis with 49 shots while the Mountain Hawks could manage just 16 shots against Hen goalkeeper Chris Collins, who had seven saves. The Hens also had a 10-2 advantage in face-offs.

Lehigh, a Patriot League contender, jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Andrew Lucas scored just four minutes into the game and Greg Morin tallied a goal just 67 seconds later.

Ryan Overs got the Hens on the board, scoring a goal on an assist by Alrich with 3:32 left in the first quarter.

Lehigh made it 3-1 when Morin scored his second goal with 8:24 left before the half.

From that point on, UD shut down the Lehigh attack and began to build some momentum of its own.

Howard, who was making his collegiate debut after missing the opener against St. Joseph’s with an injury, scored his first career goal with 6:30 left in the half to cut the lead to 3-2. and the Hens tied it less than five minutes later when Overs scored again off a feed from Alrich with 1:40 left in the half.

Alrich then scored the only two goals of the second half to give the Hens the victory.

UD will play its home opener at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, against Stony Brook University at Rullo Stadium. The game will be the first of the season for the Seawolves.
