UD men’s lacrosse team announces recruiting class

12:25 p.m., Feb. 13, 2004--Fourteen high school lacrosse standouts have signed with the University of Delaware, Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw announced Thursday.

The players will begin competing for the Fightin’ Blue Hens during the 2005 season.

The class includes two players from Delaware, defender Matt Axe, who played for St. Mark’s High School and is now at the Peddie School, and midfielder Alex Moeckel, who plays for the Tatnall School.

UD adds three players in the attack, Jim Davis of Levittown, N.Y., Vince Girodano of Moorestown, N.J., and Kent Lucas of Rockville Center, N.Y.

In addition to Moeckel, midfielders are Beau Davis of Arnold, Md., Drew Turner of Severna Park, Md., Bill Warner of Philadelphia, Kyle Rotelli of Providence, R.I., and J.J. Moran of Boonton Township, N.J. Rotelli is considered one of the top midfield prospects in the nation, and his older brother, Chris Rotelli, was the 2003 NCAA National Player of the Year at the University of Virginia.

Joining Axe on defense are Dave Erwin of Fort Washington, Pa., Matt Myones of Dix Hills, N.Y., and John Terrillion of Levittown, N.Y.

UD also has recruited a goalkeeper, Warren Mayberry of Annandale, Va.

Following is additional information about the players:

Matt Axe graduated from nearby St. Mark's High School and is attending the Peddie School in Highstown, N.J. He earned first team All-State honors, played in the Delaware Senior All-Star game and was a Battle of the Hotbeds Lacrosse Camp All-Star. “Matt switched from midfield to defense in high school with positive results,” Shillinglaw said. “He has excellent holds and can play both close and longstick midfield.”

Beau Davis was a finalist for the C. Marklin Kelly Award as the Maryland Player of the Year in 2003 at Broadneck High School. He was selected first team All-County by the Baltimore Sun and the Annapolis Capital, was named to the Washington Post All-Metro team and earned second team All-State honors. He was named to the Maryland Free State Team that defeated the Under-19 Canadian National Team last summer. “Beau is an excellent lacrosse player with size, athletic ability and skills,” Shillinglaw said. “Our staff is excited about his early commitment and what he is capable of doing for our program.”

Jim Davis has been a varsity standout since the eighth grade at Levittown High School and is the school's all-time leading scorer with 124 goals and 120 assists. He earned honorable mention All-American honors last spring, when he also was named to the All-Nassau County team for the second straight year. He was a member of the 2003 Long Island Empire Team. Davis also plays quarterback in football and point guard in basketball. “Jim is an excellent athlete and student of the game. In all three sports that he plays, he directs the offense, and our staff is looking forward to having him step into that role at Delaware,” Shillinglaw said.

Dave Erwin is a three-year starter and a team captain at Upper Dublin High School. He was team Most Valuable Player on defense and earned second team All-League honors last spring. He was an All-Star at the Fall Face-off Tournament in Baltimore. Kent Lucas has been a four-year varsity standout at South Side High School and has 107 goals and 66 assists. He earned All-Nassau County honors each of the past two seasons and was an alternate for the 2003 Long Island Empire team. “Kent is an explosive player who can play multiple positions in college,” Shillinglaw said. “Our staff is looking forward to the speed and quickness he can add to both the attack and midfield positions.”

Warren Mayberry is one of the top lacrosse goalkeepers in northern Virginia and also is a two-time ice hockey team captain at Woodson High School. He earned first team All-District and first team All-Region honors last spring and was a second team All-Journal selection. He is a two-time All-Independent Conference player in football and was the team's outstanding defensive player in 2002. He is a five-year varsity performer in ice hockey and was selected second team All-State this year. “Alex has size and skills and will be evaluated at several positions next fall,” Shillinglaw said.

J.J. Moran has already earned eight varsity letters in football, lacrosse and basketball at Mountain Lakes High School. He is a three-year standout in lacrosse, is an All-Conference forward in basketball and is a standout place kicker in football. He earned first team All-Conference honors at end and was first team All-Area and All-County as a kicker in 2003. He earned All-County and All-Division honors as a junior in 2003 and was an alternate for the Long Island Empire State team. “Matt has exceptional stick skills and speed at the long stick midfield position. Our staff is looking forward to the groundball ability and transition skills he will bring to the program,” Shillinglaw said.

A three-time All-League selection in lacrosse, he also was a standout in football, leading his team to the state title in 2001. “Kyle is one of the nation's top recruits at midfield,” Shillinglaw said. “He will bring speed and skill to our program next year.”

John Terrillion, a defender, is a four-year starter in lacrosse and was a three-year starter in football at Levittown High School, where he was a teammate of fellow 2005 recruit Jim Davis. A two-time team captain in lacrosse, he earned honorable mention All-Nassau County in 2003 and was named to the Long Island Empire State lacrosse team. He also was an All-Conference football player.
