UD men’s basketball to host ODU Jan. 17

UD senior guard Mike Ames scored 30 points in the loss to Drexel.
10:57 a.m., Jan. 16, 2004--Despite a 30-point effort from senior guard Mike Ames, the University of Delaware men’s basketball team fell 82-75 to Drexel University in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Thursday night at the Daskalakis Center in Philadelphia.

Ames scored 21 of his points in the first half and hit his first four three-point attempts, stretching his streak to nine and setting a new school record for most consecutive three-point shots made. He broke the record of eight that was set by Billy Wells in January 2001.

With the loss, the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in CAA. It was UD’s third loss in the last four outings and its fourth straight loss to Drexel.

UD will attempt to bounce back when it hosts Old Dominion University, one of the hottest teams in the conference, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Old Dominion is 9-4 overall and 4-0 in CAA after defeating James Madison University 81-60 on Wednesday. In that game, ODU’s Alex Loughton had 26 points and eight rebounds.

It was the Monarchs’ seventh straight win.

In Thursday’s loss, UD junior guard Mike Slattery scored 10 points and had 10 assists, and Harding Nana added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Drexel, which improved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in CAA, was led by forward Sean Brooks, who scored 22 points. Brooks was one of four Dragons in double figures as Bashir Mason scored 15 points and Phil Goss and Kenell Sanchez added 13 points each.

Hot shooting by Ames helped stake the Hens to a 43-40 halftime lead.

UD continued to lead early in the second half, going up 57-50 on a lay-up by Robin Wentt with 13:01 left to play.

Within the next two minutes, however, Drexel regained the lead at 58-57 on a lay-up by Brooks with 11:08 remaining.

The teams traded the lead three more times with the Hens gaining a 68-66 advantage on a three-point play by Wentt with 5:41 left.

Drexel took the lead for good at 69-68 on a fast break lay-up by Mason, and the Dragons converted seven free throws in the final 4:40 of the game to secure the victory.
