Med tech students win scholarships
The MIRT internship offers international research training opportunities to qualified minority undergraduate, graduate and medical students who are underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research careers. The internship covers travel and room, as well as laboratory and professional fees. Mary Ann McLane, associate professor of medical technology and Sommervilles research mentor, said, This is a wonderful honor for Alia, our department and for the University. McLane said Sommerville was a serious and dedicated student from the time she approached McLane to be considered for a research internship. We look forward every day to having her in the laboratory. Shes productive, enthusiastic, interested and learns quickly. Shes a delight to work with and I know that she will get every ounce of benefit from her experience in England. Sommerville did cancer research with McLane under a Howard Hughes Medical Institute, UD NUCLEUS grant. NUCLEUS recruits, retains and graduates academically talented students including those from underrepresented groups. Sommerville said she will be doing research with a faculty member at the Fogarty Center in Lancaster from May 26-Aug. 14. Three other medical technology studentsjunior Claire Zelinskas of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., junior Apoorva Srivastava of Wilmington and sophomore Dara Missan of Commack, N.Y.have been named Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Research Scholars.
