Medical technology hosts open house April 13

12:15 p.m., April 9, 2004--UD’s The Department of Medical Technology is hosting an open house for the University community from 2-4 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, in 305 Willard Hall Education Building.

The event, which precedes National Medical Laboratory Week (April 18-24), provides a forum for medical technology faculty to discuss the major at UD and to conduct tours of student laboratories. Students who enjoy and excel in biology and chemistry also will have the opportunity to learn about careers in medicine and health care.

Medical technology careers include working in hospital and private clinical laboratories; public health agencies; research and forensic laboratories; industrial, medical and biomedical laboratories; fertility centers; educational institutions; pharmaceutical companies; blood banks; physician office laboratories; and veterinary clinics. Besides laboratory positions, there are opportunities in technical sales, instrument service, management, teaching and medical writing.

The critical work done by medical laboratory professionals also is being highlighted in a public service announcement (PSA) by William Petersen, co-producer and star of TV’s “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” Reflecting this year’s National Medical Technology Week motto, “Laboratory Professionals Working With You for Better Health,” the 15-second announcement produced by CBS recognizes laboratory professionals as real heroes who use their expertise to save lives and solve crimes. The PSA also notes the current staffing shortage in the profession and encourages those interested in a career in medical technology to learn more by visiting the American Society for Clinical Pathology web site at [www.ascp.org/].

Light refreshments will be served at the open house. For more information, call 831-2849.
