UD mens basketball team holds off Loyola College
Ames produced his second straight 20-point effort and the 12th of his career with 20 points. The senior guard is now just 14 points shy of becoming the 22nd player in school history to reach 1,000 points. Slattery added 17 points and Lunn added 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists as the Hens won their third straight game and improved to 5-1. Loyola, which extended its school-record losing streak to 20 games dating back to last season, fell to 0-7 despite having four players in double figures. Charlie Bell had 17 points, Shane James 15, Lindbergh Chatman 12 points and Bernard Allen 10. The game looked like a runaway early as UD built a 19-point lead at 33-14 with 4:54 left in the first half before Loyola rallied to cut the margin to 35-27 at the break. UD made just one field goal in the final 5:40 of the half while Loyola converted four field goals in the final 2:29. UD regained control early in the second half and built the lead back up to 17 points at 56-39 with 14:29 remaining as Slattery capped a 10-2 run with a jumper. UD still led by 14 points at 64-50 with 9:46 left to play when Loyola stormed back. The Greyhounds, backed by three three-pointers, tallied 11 straight points over a span of 2:30 to cut the lead to 64-61 on a three-pointer by James with 7:15 left to play. James then followed with a lay-up at the 6:01 mark to cut the lead to one at 64-63. But Loyola was never able to take the lead as UD slowly gained some breathing room behind a three-pointer from Ames and four free throws by Lunn for a 72-66 lead with 3:11 left. Loyola pulled to within three points on a three-pointer by Bell with 41 seconds remaining, but UD sealed the victory as Slattery connected on two free throws 14 seconds later and the Greyhounds misfired on two three-point attempts in the final 13 seconds. UD, which is unbeaten on the road, will travel to Rider University for a game at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13. The Hens will then return home to face Siena College at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23, and nationally ranked St. Josephs University at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30.
