Hen men’s basketball team gains third victory on road

Chris Prothro scored a career-high 21 points.
11:12 a.m., Dec. 4, 2003--Sophomore Chris Prothro came off the bench in the first half to score 16 of his career-high 21 points in a nine-minute span to lead the University of Delaware men's basketball team to its third road victory of the season with an 89-76 win over Long Island University on Wednesday night at the Schwartz Athletic Center in Brooklyn.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens (3-1), coming off a last-second 74-72 loss to the University of San Francisco in their home opener Sunday, improved to 3-0 on the road this season. Prothro led four scorers in double figures as David Lunn had 15 points, Mike Ames had 14 points and point guard Mike Slattery had 12 points and nine assists, including the 300th of his UD career.

Long Island fell to 2-1 on the season despite a 19-point effort off the bench from Brandon Thomas. James Williams had 14 points, Raymond Edwards had 12 points and Esa Maki-Tulokas had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Prothro, who scored just seven points in the first three games of the season, dominated the action over the final six minutes of the first half to help the Blue Hens gain a narrow 47-43 lead. He scored 16 points in the final 5:48 of the half, including one stretch during which he scored 10 straight points in just 57 seconds.

Prothro started the spree with a three-pointer, followed with two free throws, connected on another three and culminated the run with a slam dunk to put the Hens up 32-28.

He added another three-pointer, and Herb Courtney added five points in the final 2:10 of the half to pace the Hens.

Long Island rallied early in the second half, cutting the lead to one point at 54-53 on a dunk by Thomas with 14:59 remaining, but UD's Raphael Madera responded with two quick baskets to give the Hens some breathing room.

The Hens built the lead to eight points at 66-58 but Long Island came back again to cut the lead to four at 70-66 on a Thomas three-point play with 7:45 remaining. They would never get closer than that the rest of the way.

UD, which converted 33 of 66 shots from the field, improved to 19-1 all-time under Head Coach David Henderson when shooting 50 percent or better. The Hens held Long Island to just two field goals in the final 5:34 and converted eight of 10 from the foul line in the final 2:03 to put the game away.

The Hens are 3-0 on the road to start the season for the first time since 1998-99.

UD will remain on the road for a game at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The Retrievers are 2-1 on the season, having defeated Loyola College and Towson University before dropping their most recent game to Princeton University.

The Hens will return home to the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center for a game at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, against Loyola College.
