UD mens basketball team edges Mount St. Marys in OT 9:34 a.m., Nov. 24, 2003--Sophomore guard Rulon Washington came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points and spark the University of Delaware mens basketball team to a 75-72 overtime victory over host Mount St. Marys College on Friday night in Emmitsburg, Md. The Fightin Blue Hens (1-0) will remain on the road for a game at American University at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25. The home opener against the University of San Francisco will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. Against Mount St. Marys, UD trailed 40-30 at halftime but put together a big rally in the second half and appeared to have the game won in regulation when Mike Ames (17 points) hit two free throws with 15 seconds left. However, Mount St. Mary's (0-3) sent the game into overtime when Charles Cook nailed a three-pointer with just three seconds left for a 62-62 tie. UD took control in overtime by converting 9 of 11 free throws, including five by David Lunn in the final minute, to complete the comeback. It was the UDs largest comeback victory since the Hens rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit against the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 1993 for a 106-98 overtime victory at the Bob Carpenter Center. Washington, a sophomore backup point guard, hit on seven of eight shots from the field for 17 points and Ames, a senior shooting guard, also scored 17. Lunn chipped in with 12 points and junior point guard Mike Slattery scored nine points and dished seven assists, while Calvin Smith had a team-high eight rebounds. Mount St. Marys led by as many as 13 points in the first half, at 34-21, and went into intermission with a 10-point cushion. In the first half, UD went more than five minutes without a field goal and committed 13 turnovers. UD fought back in the second half as the Hens shot a blistering 68.8 percent from the field (11 of 16) while holding the Mountaineers to just six field goals in 20 attempts (30.0 percent). UD tied the game at 53-53 on a jumper by freshman Henry Olawoye with 2:59 left. After two lead changes, the Hens went up 62-59 as Ames converted a lay-up with 1:10 left and hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. Cook's only second half field goal, a three-pointer with three seconds left, sent the game into overtime. The extra session featured three ties, the final one with 1:20 left when Butler converted two free throws for the Mount to tie the score at 68-68. But Lunn followed with four straight free throws in a 25-second span to put UD up for good. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
