Delawares Ames scores 28 in win over James Madison
Sophomore forward Harding Nana added 22 points as the Fightin Blue Hens broke open a close game with a 12-2 run in the second half and snapped a two-game losing streak. With the win, UD improved to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. James Madison fell to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in conference. The Hens will head north on I-95 for a conference game at Drexel Universitys Daskalakis Athletic Center at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15. Drexel is 6-6 overall and 1-2 in CAA, with the conference win a 77-61 victory over James Madison. After the Drexel game, UD will return home for CAA contests against Old Dominion University at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, and against the College of William & Mary at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21. In Mondays game, Ames connected on six of 12 three-pointers for the game, draining all five attempts in the second half, to finish with a season-high 28 points. It was his fourth 20-point effort of the season and the 13th of his career. Nana, a first-year transfer from Virginia Tech, connected on 10 of 11 free throws and finished with 22 points to go with nine rebounds. Guard Mike Slattery chipped in with 14 points and nine assists, and freshman center Raphael Madera pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds as the Hens built a 36-24 rebounding advantage. James Madison was led by guard Daniel Freeman, who scored 19 points. The Dukes also got 13 points each from forward David Cooper and guard Chris Williams. Leading scorer Dwayne Broyles, who had been averaging 15.6 points per game, was held to just six points. The first half was closely contested until the final five minutes when the Hens built a 30-20 lead with 4:48 remaining. James Madison rallied and cut the halftime lead to 32-29 as John Naparlo nailed a three-pointer and added two free throws and Cooper and Williams both added baskets. The second half featured more of the same as the lead changed hands eight times and the teams were tied on six different occasions, the last at 55-55 when Broyles hit his third free throw in a one-minute span with 8:09 remaining. But the game changed drastically from there. UD broke off on a 12-2 run as Slattery scored seven straight points, David Lunn scored on a breakaway dunk, and Ames followed with a long three-pointer to build a 67-57 with 5:13 left. The Dukes never got closer than nine points the rest of the way. UD stayed in front thanks to two slam dunks from Robin Wentt, his only two baskets of the game, just 26 seconds apart, and five free throws in the final 1:27 of the contest.
