Author of "The Madam" on campus Sept. 16

2:15 p.m., Sept. 12, 2003--Readers who have anticipated Julianna Baggott’s new novel, “The Madam,” will have double the reason to celebrate when the Newark-based author visits the campus this month.

Scheduled to appear at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the University Bookstore in the Perkins Student Center, Baggott will read passages from her work, field questions from the audience and sign copies of her new book.

Billed as a departure from her two previous coming-of-age novels “Girl Talk” and “The Miss America Family,” “The Madam” draws on Baggott’s family history and chronicles the life of her grandmother, who was raised in a southern brothel.

With this foray into historical fiction Baggott is breaking from her tradition of catering to readers in their 20s and early 30s, and says she hopes to engage a larger audience and entice new fans.

Her appearance at UD is the first stop on a tour that also includes Boston, New York, Raleigh, N.C., and Washington, D.C.

“The Madam” will be available for purchase for $24 at the University Bookstore beginning Sept. 16. Readers who want autographed copies should attend Baggott’s 7 p.m. reading and signing. For more information, call 831-2637.
