Leila Lyons inducted into ACM SIGUCCS Hall of Fame

Leila Lyons
10:02 a.m., Dec. 3, 2003--Leila Lyons, director of IT-User Services at UD, was inducted into the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services (ACM SIGUCCS) Hall of Fame at its fall conference in San Antonio in late September.

“I was very honored to be acknowledged in this way by my peers,” Lyons said.

SIGUCCS is an association of professionals who support and manage information technology services at higher education institutions.

Lyons was cited by the organization for her participation and staunch support of the organization for more than 20 years. “She strongly encourages her User Services' staff to become actively involved in SIGUCCS in order to learn from their peers, share their experience and extend their professional network,” the award citation states.

Lyons has been a presenter or co-presenter at user services conferences since 1984; co-edited the SIGUCCS newsletter with Ann Amsler, UD information resource consultant; and served on the user conference program review committee and has been program chair for three conferences. In 2005, she will chair SIGUCCS Computer Services Management Symposium.

Lyons graduated from City University in London with a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics. When she and her family moved to the United States in 1974, Lyons began working part-time for the University of Delaware's Computing Center. Since then, she has held positions of increasing responsibility for evolving support services in computing and information technology.

Since she became director of IT-User Services in 1992, Lyons has been responsible for delivering high-quality support services to the University community in research data management; desktop computing; computing site operation and departmental computing; instructional support and information services; and support for faculty use of technology in teaching and learning.
