Chinese poetry, art lecture set April 29

Jonathan Chaves
11:56 a.m., April 27, 2004--Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese language and literature at The George Washington University, will discuss Chinese poetry and art in a lecture set for 4 p.m., Thursday, April 29, in Rooms 209-211 at the Trabant University Center.

Titled “The Scholarly Arts of China,” the lecture will focus on the “three perfections” of poetry, painting and calligraphy in traditional Chinese civilization.

Chaves, who has authored several books and articles on Chinese poetry, painting and calligraphy, will demonstrate in his slide-illustrated lecture how the three disciplines interrelate. He also will discuss the influence Chinese art has had on Japan.

The free public lecture is part of the University’s Distinguished Scholars Series and is sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

For more information, call Maria Gilson in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at 831-6458.
