The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at 9:45 a.m., in 102 Colburn. A reception in conjunction with the lecture will be held from 4-5 p.m., Friday, April 23, in the second floor lobby of Colburn Laboratory. Glotzer, who earned a bachelors degree in physics from Boston University, holds a doctorate in physics from the University of California at Los Angeles. Before joining the faulty at the University of Michigan in 2001, Glotzer was director from 1997-2000 of the Center for Theoretical and Computational Materials Science of the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Glotzers honors include Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer (2001-03), the American Physical Societys Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award (2000) and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (1998). Dr. Colburn was a nationally prominent chemical engineer who was chairman of UDs Department of Chemical Engineering. He also served as acting-president of the University in 1950 and provost from 1950 until his death in 1955. The Annual Allan Colburn Lectureship recognizes young faculty or engineers who best exemplify Colburns scholarly abilities on pragmatic and theoretical problems, as well as his interest in all humanity.
