Jewish studies spring lecture series begins Feb. 17

2:36 p.m., Feb. 3, 2004--The spring 2004 “Issues and Ideas in Jewish Studies” lecture series will be held from 12:30—1:30 p.m., Tuesdays, in 329 Purnell Hall. The lecture series, free and open to the public, is designed as an introduction to contemporary and historic issues in Jewish culture and literature.

Speakers and topics include:

  • Feb. 17—Jack Zigon, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council and community planning for the Jewish Federation of Delaware, "IsraelŠand how it is seen by the world";
  • Feb. 24—Hannah Kliger, associate dean for academic affairs and professor of communications and Jewish studies at Penn State, Abington, "Holocaust Survivor Families and the Legacy of Hope";
  • March 2—Jonathan Palevsky, program director, WBJC (91.5 FM) in Baltimore, "Rhythm and Jews: Klezmer Music from the Old World to the New";
  • March 9—Jonathan Tobin, editor, Jewish Exponent, Philadelphia, "American Jews and Israel: Changing Relationships";
  • March 16—Rabbi Peter Grumbacher, congregation Beth Emeth, Wilmington, “Do You Pray for A’s? How Judaism Views Prayer and Worship";
  • March 30—Sam Gaertner, UD professor of psychology, "Prejudice Among the Well—Intentioned";
  • April 13—Vivian Klaff, UD professor of Jewish studies and director of the UD Center for Jewish Studies, "The National Jewish Population Survey 2000—01: What We Have Learned About the Jewish Population";
  • April 20—Rabbi Eliezer Sneiderman, director of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life, Newark, "Boundaries of Life: Abortion and Euthanasia in Jewish Law";
  • April 27—Carol Harris-Shapiro, assistant professor of contemporary Jewish studies at Gratz College, Melrose Park, Pa., "Who Is a Jew: Complexities of Current Jewish Identity";
  • May 4—Heidi Kaufman, UD assistant professor of English, "Dressing for a Masquerade: Benjamin Disraeli in the Victorian Political Cartoon";
  • May 11—Phil Jacobs, editor, Baltimore Jewish Times, "The Role of the Jewish Press.”
