UD rower Lane Kohl earns national academic honor

Lane Kohl
3:52 p.m., June 10, 2004--The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association has announced its sixth annual National Scholar-Athlete awards and among the recipients in the Mid-Atlantic region is Lane Kohl of the University of Delaware.

The National Scholar-Athlete award, which was awarded to 124 NCAA Division I scholar-athletes, is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains who must have participated in at least three-quarters of the season’s races in the varsity boat and have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Kohl recently completed her sophomore year as an exercise physiology major with a grade point average of 3.93. She was one of 21 rowers honored in the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes the U.S. Naval Academy, Cornell, Massachusetts, George Washington, Rutgers, Syracuse, Pennsylvania and Fordham.

Kohl was part of a UD team led by first year Head Coach Laura Slice that won its third straight unofficial Colonial Athletic Association title at the 38th annual Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

Kohl had an outstanding season, having competed on the Fightin’ Blue Hens varsity eights crew that finished second to Drexel University in its race at the Kerr Cup. That crew also won a dual meet at Barry University in Florida, finished second in a dual meet at Bucknell University and finished eighth at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro championships.

Kohl also was a member of the second varsity eights crew that won its dual meet against LaSalle and Lehigh universities in the season opener.

Other rowers from the Mid-Atlantic region named National Scholar-Athletes were: Shaunnah Wark, Kathleen Mortenson, Kacie Inman and Margaret Sweeny, all of Navy; Victoria Liang, Amelia Siani and Rachel Gage, all of Cornell; Katie O’Brien and Catherine Gariepy, both of Massachusetts; Regina Cambilargiu and Emily Garofalo, both of George Washington; Lauren Kolb, Amy Bircsak, Karen Cornell, Nancy Erickson and Melissa Thomas, all of Rutgers; Anna Goodale and Catherine Henny, both of Syracuse; Susan Francia of Pennsylvania; and Megan Rogers of Fordham.
