New Microsoft security patch will protect most UD Windows computers

4:13 p.m., Sept. 11, 2003--On Wednesday, Sept. 10, Microsoft announced a new critical update to fix a security problem on Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems.

“This is an extremely important update for NT, 2000, and XP users to install,” Karl Hassler, associate director for Information Technologies-Network and Systems Services, said. “Apparently, the vulnerability that allowed the Blaster and Nachia worms to wreak havoc on the Internet last month is more extensive than originally thought. The patch Microsoft announced yesterday provides a more complete approach to fixing this vulnerability,” Hassler said.

“It is absolutely essential that all Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP users immediately update their systems with this newest patch to prevent future attacks.”

Hassler advised UD students, faculty and staff with vulnerable systems to visit [www.udel.edu/security/secchkwin.html] to install the latest Microsoft patches and to learn more about Microsoft updates.

In addition, all University students, faculty and staff with Windows computers should configure their systems to receive automatic notifications when Windows security patches become available and install them as soon as possible. See [http://udeploy.udel.edu/winup.html] for more information.

All University computing users should also install McAfee anti-virus software available at [http://udeploy.udel.edu].

Those using a service provider other than the University of Delaware to connect to the Internet should follow the link for using "the University’s web proxy server" on the UDeploy web page [http://udeploy.udel.edu].
