Roberta Golinkoff, H. Rodney Sharp Professor of Educational Studies at UD, was featured Oct. 22 on the live Comcast program Your Morning on CN8, where she discussed her new book, “Einstein Never Used Flash Cards: How Our Children Really Learn and Why They Need to Play More and Memorize Less.” Golinkoff and Kathy Hirsh-Pasek of Temple University are coauthors of the book.

Time magazine features a cover story on the SATs and Linda Gottfredson, UD professor of education, is quoted in a sidebar concerning the alternative Rainbow Project test developed by psychologist Robert Sternberg. “You can't fake solving a math problem," Gottfredson told the magazine. "You can fake conscientiousness."

Ben Yagoda, professor of English at UD, has written a new book about John Wister and the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. Titled “The Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College: The First 75 Years,” the book was featured in the Oct. 19 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Delaware Wing-T offense is the rage among Indiana high schools involved in the state playoffs, according to the Oct. 24 Indianapolis Star, which cites the development of the offense by retired UD head football coach Tubby Raymond.

The University of Delaware mascot YoUDee is featured in the national fall issue of the magazine College Bound Teen. The big Blue Hen is one of eight mascots featured, including Peter the Anteater from the University of California Irvine and the Banana Slug from the University of California Santa Cruz.

Alexander Settles, assistant policy specialist in UD’s Institute for Public Administration, is quoted in an Oct. 20 Wilmington News Journal story about the growth of Millsboro, noting that communities a short drive from the Delaware beaches are under intense development pressure.

Tom Leitch, professor of English at UD, is quoted about Dracula in an article in the Oct. 19 Sunday Wilmington News Journal on two upcoming productions in the region. “We are drawn to him by nostalgia for simple dangers,” he is quoted. “We know how his story ends. We know what is going to happen. ‘Dracula’ is an adult fairy tale.”

Andrea Barrier, associate professor of theatre, offers a Halloween costume tip in the Oct. 24 Wilmington News Journal.

David Legates, associate professor of geography at UD, is quoted in a story in the Oct. 22 New Zealand National Business Review concerning the Russians leaving the Kyoto Protocol. He told the publication he believes studies show that climate variability has been a natural occurrence.

ALUMNI

UD alumnus Jeanne Snyder, a 1971 education graduate, has been honored with an Outstanding Teacher Award by the Shippensburg University School Study Council for her work as a kindergarten teacher.

Robert Mahon, UD American studies graduate and artist, has created a photomontage of former New Jersey poet laureate Gerald Stern, according to an article in the Oct. 20 Packet newspapers. The work is displayed in an exhibit at the Hunterdon Museum of Art in Clinton, N.J.

Millville Superintendent of Schools G. Larry Miller, who earned a doctorate in education from UD in 1990, has been named the New Jersey Superintendent of the Year, the Bridgeton News reports.
