Carolyn A. Thoroughgood, dean of the College of Marine Studies, is quoted in an April 21 Wilmington News Journal story on a new report by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy. Ocean science capabilities have declined because of lack of funding, she said, agreeing with the commissions call for a dedicated trust fund to pay for research. Thoroughgood and Biliana Cicin-Sain, director of the Gerard J. Mangone Center for Marine Policy, served on the commissions Science Advisory Panel.
Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in an April 21 Sacramento Bee story concerning activism by the California Public Employees Retirement System, which some argue is overreaching. Elson suggested, They need to pick their battles carefully.
David Mills, professor of computer and electrical engineering, is cited in an E-Commerce Times story on algorithms that changed the world. He wrote the algorithm that synchronizes the clocks on the Internet.
David S. Chapman, associate scientist in the College of Marine Studies, was interviewed on WKXW-FM in Trenton, N.J., concerning high-speed ferries in the New York metropolitan area. Safety considerations in the congested port will make it unlikely 50-knot vehicle ferries will be used anytime soon.
Leland Ware, Louis L. Redding Chair, is featured in an April 20 Wilmington News Journal story concerning a UD symposium on the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision.
Louis Hirsch, UD director of admissions, is quoted in an April 19 Wilmington News Journal story about how improved facilities attract prospective students. He said the new center for the arts will have a tremendous impact.
Gordon DiRenzo, professor of sociology, is quoted in an April 19 Wilmington News Journal story on the need for workers to prepare for job loss. "Know that you have a track record and you can be successful at another employer," he said.
James C. Galloway, assistant professor of physical therapy, is featured in an April 17 Wilmington News Journal story about his research on the motor development of infants.
Susan Strasser, professor of history, is quoted in an April 17 New York Times story concerning Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has come to represent something that's even bigger than it is, she said.
ALUMNI
Kristin Nolt, who holds a bachelors degree from UD, has been named senior vice president of public affairs for Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif.
Thomas W. Hofmann, who holds a UD bachelors degree in accounting, has been named to the board of directors of VIASYS Healthcare. Hofmann is senior vice president and chief financial officer of Sunoco.
