10:34 a.m., March 5, 2004--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted March 4 concerning Michael Eisner and Disney by the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Associated Press, Bloomberg and Reuters. "I've never seen a response this big in a public company the size of Disney. The board cannot maintain the status quo. This is enormous," Elson told USA Today, predicting more such shareholder uprisings in the future.

Also, Elson is quoted in the Feb. 29 Sunday Times of London concerning the Hollinger decision in the Delaware Court of Chancery and wrote an opinion piece on that topic in the March 1 Toronto Globe and Mail.

Carolyn Manning, associate professor of nutrition and dietetics, is quoted in a March 4 Wilmington News Journal story about the downsizing of portions by McDonald’s. “Large is never good except when you’re talking about fruits and vegetables,” she said.

James Butkiewicz, professor of economics, is quoted in a March 2 Atlanta Journal Constitution story about how small firms are slowly sending jobs to other countries, or “offshoring.”

David Legates, associate professor of geography, is quoted in a March 2 Wilmington News Journal story about below-normal precipitation in January and February. He said the region had been in a wet period after the drought of 2001-02 and “maybe we’re in for another switch again.”

The UD men’s basketball team is included in a Colonial Athletic Association tournament preview in the March 1 Richmond Times Dispatch, which calls the Fightin’ Blue Hens the “cardiac kids” for the many close games in which they have been involved.

Nancy Jordan, associate professor of education, is quoted in a Feb. 29 Boston Globe story about the teaching of mathematics. She said the good news is that many children enter elementary school with a sound sense of numbers.
