Nov. 1 performance shares Indian culture and heritage

12:55 p.m., Oct. 24, 2003--An upcoming performance sponsored by UD’s Indian Students Association will treat audience members to a slice of East Indian culture. Set to take place from 5:30-9:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, in Mitchell Hall, the four-hour extravaganza coincides with Diwali, the Hindi festival of lights. Show elements will include a fashion parade, a concert and a step performance by members of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

According to Aarti Mahtani, president of the Indian Students Association, the performance, which is now into its fifth year, is designed to promote cultural pride and increase visibility of Indian students on campus. Entitled Ujale Kior, which translates into English as “toward the light,” the event will showcase traditional Indian costumes, customs and music. Additional elements, such as the step show, will cross cultural lines and explore how customs and holiday traditions often intermingle.

Tickets purchased in advance of the show are $6 for balcony seats and $8 for orchestra seats. Tickets purchased at the door are $8 for balcony seats and $10 for orchestra seats. For more information, call Mahtani at (732) 910-5012.
