Delaware ranked No. 9 by Sports Illustrated

9:40 a.m., Aug. 7, 2003--The Sports Illustrated college football preview issue ranks the University of Delaware No. 9 in NCAA Division I-AA.

The magazine notes that the Fightin’ Blue Hens will be led by quarterback Andy Hall, a transfer from Georgia Tech who threw for 1,832 yards and ran for another 863 in 2002.

Sports Illustrated ranks at No. 7 the University of Massachusetts, which like UD competes in the Atlantic 10 Football Conference. It does not mention Northeastern University, which is picked by coaches and sportswriters to win the conference title.

The magazine ranks Grambling State University No. 1, followed by the University of Montana and Georgia Southern University.

In other polls, Delaware is ranked:

• No. 7 by Lindy’s, which has UMass at No. 6, Northeastern at No. 12 and Hofstra University at No. 15;

• No. 13 by Athlon Sports Magazine, which has UMass at No. 7, Northeastern at No. 10, Villanova at No. 18 and the University of Maine at No. 24; and

• No. 15 by Street & Smith’s, which has Northeastern at No. 1, UMass at No. 8 and Villanova University at No. 22.
