UD basketball teams picked fourth in CAA
1:10 p.m., Oct. 30, 2003--The University of Delaware mens and womens basketball teams are both picked to finish fourth in the conference this year, it was announced during the annual Media Day event held Wednesday at the ESPN Zone in Washington, D.C.
Representatives of the media determined the projected order of finish, with George Mason University picked to win the mens championship and perennial power Old Dominion University picked to win the womens championship.
Last season, the University of Delaware and Old Dominion shared the womens regular season title, and the Monarchs defeated the Fightin Blue Hens in the conference tournament championship game.
The University of North Carolina Wilmington womens team is picked to finish second and George Mason University is picked to finish third. Trailing the fourth-ranked Hens are James Madison, Virginia Commonwealth, Hofstra, Drexel, William & Mary and Towson.
UD junior forward Tiara Malcom is a preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association selection.
UD Head Coach Tina Martin has led the Hens to four consecutive 20-win seasons and three straight postseason appearances, once in the NCAA tournament and twice in the Womens National Invitation Tournament.
In mens basketball, George Mason is picked to unseat defending champion University of North Carolina Wilmington, which is picked to finish third. Virginia Commonwealth University is picked to finish second.
UD is picked to finish fourth and received one first-place vote. Trailing the Hens are Drexel, Old Dominion, Hofstra, James Madison, William & Mary and Towson.
Two UD mens basketball players were selected to the All-CAA preseason team. Shooting guard Mike Ames, a senior, was named to the first team and point guard Mike Slattery, a junior, was named to the second team.
UD Head Coach David Henderson enters his fourth season, having led the Hens to the America East Conference title game in his first season and to the CAA semifinals each of the last two seasons.
