UD’s Blood, Buffone named to CoSIDA All-Academic team

11:12 a.m., Jan. 8, 2004--University of Delaware women's soccer standouts Caryn Blood and Ginette Buffone have been selected to the Verizon College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District 2 All-Academic team. UD was one of just five universities to have more than one player named to the team.

Blood, a senior forward, was named to the first team, and Buffone, a senior midfielder, was named to the second team.

In all, 22 NCAA Division I student-athletes from universities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia were selected.

To be eligible, student-athletes must carry a 3.2 or better grade point index and be a starter or key reserve for her team.

Blood, who earned second team District 2 All-Academic honors in 2002, completed an outstanding career at UD this fall.

A three-year starter for the Fightin’ Blue Hens after transferring from Miami University of Florida, Blood earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors all three seasons at UD. She was named second team All-CAA this fall when she led the team in scoring with four goals and 10 assists.

Blood ranked among the national leaders in assists all season. For her career, she scored 20 goals and 19 assists and ranks fourth all-time at UD with 59 career points.

She has earned a 3.815 grade point average as a sport management major and is a National Soccer Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete nominee.

Buffone started all 19 games at midfield this season and had two goals and one assist. During her career, she scored three goals and had 15 assists, including a conference-leading 11 in 2001 when she earned honorable mention All-CAA. She missed both the 1999 and 2002 seasons with injuries.

Buffone has earned a 3.576 grade point average as an elementary education major. She is also a National Soccer Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete nominee.

In 2003, UD enjoyed one of the finest seasons in school history under Head Coach Scott Grzenda. The Hens were 10-6-3 overall and finished third in the CAA with a mark of 5-2-2.

UD reached the CAA championship tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals.
